Lightning Strike Electrical Repair
Lightning contains well over 100 million volts that can wreak havoc on your electrical wiring. The initial lightning strike isn’t necessarily what damages your electrical system right away—it’s the power surges that follow which can spike the voltage, causing damage to many items in the house that rely on power to work. The most susceptible electronics and appliances are GFI outlets, TVs, audio equipment, computers, dimmers, switches, garage door openers, elements of an electric range/oven, and more.
Also, it doesn’t have to be a direct hit either. A lightning strike a block away can still cause issues, such as flickering lights and outlets not working properly.
If you notice issues now or later, don’t delay! Concealed damage in the wires of your home or business can cause fires and other major disruptions to your business or home. It’s important to have a trained and experienced electrical technician, like those at Innovet Electrical, to inspect and diagnose the problem. Contact us for a free estimate and same day service.

What To Do After a Lightning Storm
- Take out any device plugged into a receptacle and inspect the metal prongs for any signs of burns. If you find melted metal or dark pits, then the outlet and plug should be replaced.
- Using an inexpensive outlet checker, check on all outlets for malfunctions like neutrals, open grounds, etc.
- Open the circuit breaker and do a visual check for signs of burned wires or arcing. If you see a tripped breaker, flip it to the “on” position, then to the “off” position three times in a row in order to ensure the circuit has been reset. If it will not hold in the “on” position, then contact us!
By taking these steps, you should have peace of mind following a lightning storm. If you are not comfortable doing all of these inspections yourself, ask us to take a look!
In the future, use a surge suppressor system to minimize the damage left behind by power surges and protect your devices from their effects. Also, consider panel-mounted surge protection to reduce the damage to your property’s electrical gateway. Surge protection is a good investment in order to save appliances and wiring from the damage a lightning strike can cause.
